NATIONAL GROUP CONFRONTS RELIGIOUS RIGHT WITH NEW HANDBOOK
Recent news from across the nation reveals that the radical religious right has been born again. The institute for First Amendment Studies has responded to this resurgence with the publication of Challenging the Christian Right: The Activist's Handbook.
Several religious right organizations, most notably Pat Robertson's political organization, Christian Coalition, have published guides designed to help Christians take over school boards and county governments. The National Association of Christian Educators (see enclosed article from The Wall Street Journal, July 15, 1992) uses a guidebook called How To Elect Christians to Public Office. The Institute for First Amendment Studies first warned about this group in its July 1985 issue of The Freedom Writer.
As a result of the radical religious right's switch in focus from national politics to local politics, the Institute felt it necessary to make available a tool to help win the new cultural war, and challenge those who attack our traditional American freedoms.
Challenging the Christian Right: The Activist's Handbook is based upon years of research and the Institute's extensive files on the religious right. Investigative journalist Frederick Clarkson, and former Christian Fundamentalist Skipp Porteous wrote and compiled the handbook.
Over 250 national and grass roots organizations currently have the handbook. It will continue to be made available to organizations and individuals that promote the separation of church and state, anti-censorship groups, and pro-choice and pro-gay groups.
The Freedom Writer is the national newsletter that defends the separation of church and state. It is published bi-monthly by the Institute for First Amendment Studies, Inc., a not-for-profit organization.
The Activist's Handbook comes in a loose-leaf binder and can be an important piece of ammo in your arsenal against the Christian Right. Get your copy by sending a check or money order for $15 (postage included) to The Freedom Writer, P.O. Box 589, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
