Like the creature that wouldn't die from a bad grade-B horror flick, the proposed Senate Bill S.983, the notorious, so-called "Pornography Victims Compensation Act"--which groups like the Media Coalition, Inc., our own Grass-Roots Coalition and many individuals throughout the U.S. worked hard to (successfully) stymie before the Judiciary Committee last summer is BACK again as the revamped and retitled S.1521.
S.1521 was expected to have been reintroduced before the Senate Judiciary Committee a couple of different times this year already; at which time Coalition participants and friends were alerted to call/write their representatives of Committee Chairman Biden as to their concerns, as well as encourage others to do the same.
Despite these most recent, positive sounding developments, the Grass-Roots Coalition will continue to monitor the status of S.1521 UNTIL the thing's dead in the water. We urge everyone, everywhere to KEEP THE PRESSURE ON to stop S.1521 once and for all, by continuing to HAMMER THE REPRESENTATIVES with phone calls (Senate Switchboard (202) 224-3207) or by calling Judiciary Committee Chairman Senator Biden at (302) 573-6345 (Del. home office). It might be a good time to register your concerns as an American with Sen. McConnell's office as well.
KEEP UP THE OPPOSITION! HAMMER IT HOME! STOP S.1521!
(for a detailed analysis of S.983/S.1521 see THE ROC #7.)
HOLD THE PRESS
As we go to press, ROC has learned that the Canadian Supreme Court has effectively voted to make sexually explicit materials illegal under the unproven notion that such material "causes" violence against women, a la the rationale behind S.1521. More details next issue.
Apparently the recent resolutions by the N.Y. and L.A. chapters of the National Organization of Women (NOW) AGAINST S.1521, as well as the founding of the Ad Hoc Feminist Coalition for Free Expression (with members like authors Erica Jong and Judy Blume) organized specifically to oppose the bill, has given even bill sponsor Mitch McConnell (R-KY) cold feet. McConnell is quoted in last week's BILLBOARD as describing S.1521 as "on-hold."
It would seem McConnell and bill co-sponsors were banking on 'feminist' support for S.1521 and were knocked off balance to learn that the myth of American feminists sharing the same ideological bed (on the issue of censorship) with the Anti-Choice, Anti-ERA Religious Right was just that--a myth.
