MINISTRY - JESUS BUILT MY HOTROD

REVIEW BY MIKE HECK

Father Al is back to grace us; Houssana in the highest? At the foot of the MINISTRY steps, lays the newest testament from head minister, Al Jourgensen and Paul Barker. This souped-up 3 song maxi-single features 2 versions of "JESUS BUILT MY HOTROD" and another new one, "TV SONG." Gibby Haynes of the BUTTHOLE SURFERS, is added as guest vox and extra insanity, and waves the flag for the horrific race of infinity from hell. No THROBBING GRISTLE or KRAFTWERK influence here, rather J.B.M.H. is a nihilistic speed ride into the 21st century. If Jerry Lee Lewis were to be born in the future, and handed an "electric" guitar, a few computers and Marshall stacks and forced to play at firepoint by Satan, J.B.M.H. would be the finished result. The first version which clocks in at 8:13 (redline/whiteline version) opens with industrial chantings & samples and a classic intro from Gibby Haynes: "Soon I discovered this rock thing was true. Jerry Lee Lewis was the devil. Jesus was an architect, previous to his career as a prophet. All of a sudden, I found myself in love with the world, so there was only one thing that I could do: was ding-a-ding-dang-my-dang-a-dang-a-long-ling-long." From there the MINISTRY motor blast wide open and shifts into double bass high speed, closing out the winning race with hypnotic questioning of American ethics. The 2nd version reaching 3:42 is spliced down to the quoted intro, double bassed metallic mayhem minus the slide lead. Both versions great modern punk rock! TV SONG is more reminiscent of BLACK FLAG's dirge period; but hey, who's complaining? I'll turn to that channel anytime. TV SONG is actually punk/metal speed blitz and is a welcome addition to the MINISTRY catalog of songs.

The promo video for J.B.M.H. is the prime version of the song. This version which clocks in at 5:02, differs from the CD versions and hopefully will appear on the new LP. The video takes a controversial look at American "good 'ole boy" standards, while questioning religious fundamentalists and moralistic beliefs. In fact, instead of Jerry Lee Lewis being accused as the devil in the intro, the video blames Jesus! While MTV have given somewhat medium rotation to the video certain parts have been censored; for instance, the footage of the priest begging for money from his TV show, with the phone number blinking 1-900-666-PRAY" and the images of Jesus, which have been toned lightly for the "play it safe" MTV. Pretty gutsy!

This year should break the MINISTRY wide open, especially with the new release due soon. LET US PRAY THAT JESUS BUILDS EVERY HOT ROD....WITH MINISTRY BLUEPRINTS!
