We all know how frustrating it can be walking into a music store to buy a tape, and being told you have to be 18 to buy it. We become angry for awhile, and then forget about it until the next time a similar situation arises. It's time to quit being armchair soldiers! Get off your gluteus maximus' (that's your asses everybody), we need all the help we can get to win this war.
I will cover most of the well known ways to help put an end to censorship. After all, if we don't who will? It certainly won't be the PMRC.
Call the politicians in your area and question them about their policies concerning censorship of the arts. If they should happen to give you the run-around, pay a visit to the party or campaign offices. You are more likely to be treated respectfully, for if you aren't, tell them they could be losing a crucial vote. When calling a politician, always use diplomatic language. If you address campaign members, or members of a pro-censorship unit, they won't be able to use your words against you, or paint you as a fanatic.
Have you heard the expression, "The pen is mightier than the sword?" Writing your Congressman/woman (or in Canada, your Premier) and asking about their position on this topic will make them realize that there are thousands of people who won't tolerate others making choices for them. By all means, don't just write one letter and leave it at that. Follow it up with a phone call, or another letter asking for a reply. Who knows, they might surprise you and actually answer you. I can't stress this enough, and I'm sure the R.O.C. can't either. USE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE! Only you can change our government's mind. They are nothing without votes.
Beverage companies such as Coors Beer, 7-UP/Dr. Pepper have been supporting groups like the PMRC, financially. Again write to the companies and tell them you and others will boycott their products. Demand a public statement declaring that they no longer support pro-censorship unions.
If a situation arises where there is a lot of controversy because of banning of books, records, etc., organize a peaceful rally or protest. Possible sites could be city hall, or wherever attempted censorship is taking place. I've got some slogans for placards or banners if you're stuck for ideas.
A) "AMERICA (CANADA) THE FREE...OR IS IT?"
B) "BERLIN TOOK DOWN THEIR IRON CURTAIN, WHY ARE WE PUTTING UP OUR OWN?"
As you see, we can fight the evils of censorship together. Quit arguing over which bands or music "suck" and which "rule". This is exactly what the PMRC wants. Internal conflict so they can more easily destroy what we are working towards. "ACTION IN UNISON" must be our motto. After all it was Abraham Lincoln who said "...a house divided can not stand..."
