Do you remember those Public Service Announcements that ran on MTV last fall for ROCK THE VOTE? Do you recall those "big name stars" who told us that "we must fight apathy and voting was the best way to combat censorship." Who can forget IGGY POP being wrapped in tape while reciting the First Amendment. Or how about that MADONNA, in her red panties and Old Glory warning us, "if you don't vote you're gonna get a spankie." Perhaps it is the "Material Girl" who should bend over for a few good licks. Guess what folks? She didn't vote! And according to ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE neither did most of the artists paraded before us by ROCK THE VOTE and VIRGIN RECORDS.
The list of "pro-vote" "non-voters" include: IGGY POP, MARTHA QUINN, MC HAMMER, JUSTINE BATEMAN, WOODY HARRELSON, MICHAEL PENN, JESSICA PARKER, ROBERT DOWNEY Jr., and LENNY KRAVITZ.
ROCK THE VOTE has made a ton of excuses for the non-voting stars, citing everything from difficult concert schedules to unfair registration laws. We at R.O.C. find all of this very disturbing.
We have noticed that many of these same non-voters have surfaced again in the remake video of the JOHN LENNON anti-war anthem GIVE PEACE A CHANCE (incidentally, which is also released by VIRGIN RECORDS). It makes us wonder if their commitment to ending the war is as sincere as their voting to fight censorship was? And by the way, the editor of this paper spent six years in exile in a foreign country in defiance to the last war, (Vietnam) and he did exercise his right to vote last November. --JW
