LOS ANGELES GETS ITS ASS IN GEAR - SLAM THE PMRC!!
ROCK & ROLL CONFIDENTIAL, the pro-rock music industry newsletter, staged its first anti-censorship rally in the Southland at Santa Monica's RHINO RECORDS on January 23rd. The meeting was attended by about 75 musicians, agents, DJs, writers, record company and retail outlet representatives and fans. The meeting was called to organize opposition to restrictions on Rock, Rap, and Metal music in Los Angeles.
In addition to adopting the name of SLAM (which we understand stands for Support the Liberation of American Music) a number of major decisions were made at this historic meeting. Among them were: 1) Target corporations who support censorship and boycott them. 2) Participate in the DAY OF DECENCY activities which all University of California radio stations are holding on March 4th. 3) Organize teams to pass out anti-censorship information at concerts. 4) Make anti-censorship PSA's for TV and radio. 5) Get people to write to their politicians. 6) File a class action lawsuit against the PMRC for abridging our rights. 7) Research who is on the FCC and pressure them to stop censoring radio.
A number of committees were also formed at the meeting. These committees, will meet over the next weeks. The committees established so far were Media Committee, (contact Lisa Jacobs at (213) 421-5608), Legal Committee, (contact Steve Kurtz at (213) 466-6808), and Boycott Committee, (contact Lee Ballinger at (213) 204-0827). This is also the number for general information about SLAM.
