PHYLLIS SCHLAFLY: GRAND DAME OF CENSORSHIP

Since founding her EAGLE FORUM organization in 1972 Phyllis Schlafly has been a stye in the public eye, dispersing disinformation around the Equal Rights Amendment, fighting sex education in the public schools, working against federally funded daycare, opposing reproductive rights and more. What's not so known perhaps is the role this Grand Matriarch of the Right has played in fanning the flames of censorship efforts in the U.S.

EAGLE FORUM members around the U.S. have been among the most active leaders in local censorship activities, targeting works by Steinbeck, the film version of Romeo & Juliet, and various sex and AIDS education programs. Last spring Schlafly and the forum were active around the Mapplethorpe flap, slinking around urging Congress to HALT ALL FUNDING to the National Endowment for the Arts.

In fact, Jean Dixon, loony-bird ex-state representative from Missouri became a record labeling crusader after encouragement from one Shirley Marvin, a lobbyist for EAGLE FORUM. EAGLE FORUM has also provided flyers to the PMRC for distribution calling for the banning of live rock and metal concerts in Texas.

Schlafly will be debating Sarah Weddington at Youngstown State University on March 5th. Weddington first came to public attention at age 26 in her successful defense before the Supreme Court of "Jane Doe" in the landmark Roe v. Wade decision on a woman's right to choose abortion. The debate starts at 7:30pm in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Hall on the YSU Campus. The R.O.C. posse will be on hand to extend the same "warm welcome" to Phyllis Schlafly that we have given to FRONTLINE MINISTRIES and other assorted kooks, nuts and outright fascists like Schlafly when they slink through Ohio. BE THERE!
